Eau Claire firefighters mourn loss of crew member after fight with cancer

Eau Claire (WQOW) - With flags at half-staff, the Eau Claire Fire Department is remembering one of its own.

Denise Waterman, a 16 year veteran of the fire department, lost her battle with cancer yesterday. To her firefighter brothers and sisters, Denise was known for her kind and generous spirit.

Described as an artist by her colleagues, who say her love of animals, especially dogs and horses, drove her compassion in her career. She spent much of her Eau Claire career as an engineer and paramedic on Medic 10.

"Our firefighters have been there with her husband and her family throughout the whole thing so it has been something that has impacted everyone quite greatly. Now, with the loss of her, that impact is felt even more deeply," Allyn Bertrang, Deputy Chief with the Eau Claire Fire Department says.

A couple of weeks ago we told you about a group of firefighters who are running in the Eau Claire marathon on Sunday in full gear to raise money for cancer research. Those firefighters say they will be running in Denise's honor.

It is with great sadness that the Grand Chute Fire Department announces the passing of Fire Prevention Specialist Jesse T. Pickett.

Jesse and his family were involved in motor vehicle crash while returning from a family gathering in the Wisconsin Dells area on Sunday December 8, 2013. As a result of injuries sustained in the crash, Jesse passed away at the scene. His wife and two daughters were also injured and transported to a Madison area hospital.

Jesse began his career with the Grand Chute Fire Department in February, 2009 as our Fire Prevention Specialist. Jesse was the department's Public Information Officer and was instrumental in working with the media. His tremendous passion for promoting public education in our schools and at many community events was evident through his dedication and strong commitment to his firefighting career.

Our department, the community, and his many friends are at a deep loss with his passing. Our hearts go out to his wife, children, extended family, and the many others which are affected as a result of this tragedy.

Grief counselors will be available to meet with firefighters and Town employees. Funeral arrangements are pending at this time.
